The awed crowd falls silent as the player makes his desperate gambit. He’s performed well in the clutch before, but this would be something else. Something special. The pressure’s immense. Sweat on his brow, he makes his move. The crowd, seeing his play, can’t believe it for a second… but then it hits them: That just happened. The entire room goes wild. The thrill of victory! A 300-pound giant of a man leaps up, screaming in joy, basking in the adulation as supporters hoist him on their shoulders, carrying him not just into the streets, but into the halls of legend.
No, I’m not talking about your Lebron Jameses or your Dwayne Rolosons. I’m of course talking about Randy Fundel’s 2005 Friday Night Magic victory over young upstart, 6th-grader Martin “Shadowmage” Swarney. It’s moments like those that define the Magic: The Gathering competitive scene, and with that in mind, why don’t we take a look at some of the new cards the renaissance men at Wizards of the Coast have dreamed up for 2013!
